Nissan’s Sunderland plant is the largest UK car producer (it produced 315,000 cars in 2005). The plant has a 4,500-strong workforce, and some 12,000 jobs in Nissan’s local supply chain rely on the factory.
In 2004, Nissan installed 6 turbine (4 megawatt) wind farm. It is the first wind farm within the global Nissan group and will generate around 5% of the factory’s annual electricity requirement.
The wind-generated energy will save the plant up to £800,000 annually. The project will pay for itself in around 4 years, and Nissan currently has planning permission for a 7th turbine.
We were able to assist Nissan in minimising the visual impact of the turbines on the area by advising they were erected on low lying ground in the centre of the site, below the surrounding skyline.

Croda Chemicals Europe, part of Croda Chemicals Plc, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of natural based speciality chemicals, with manufacturing facilities throughout the UK and the rest of the World.
Electricity generated by the turbine is being fed directly into the company’s electricity supply, reducing the need for the company to import power from the National Grid.
The project received planning consent in 2006 and the turbine was constructed in September 2008.
